This article aims to make a formal analysis of teaching in Middle Level Technical Professional Education (EPTNM) in Brazil, highlighting the laws and other regulations of the country’s educational legislation, mainly related to professional education and teacher formation for the professional education, from the creation of the first technical schools in Brazil to the current EPTNM. Initially, a bibliographical review was carried out and later a field research was carried out. Eight teachers who work at EPTNM and who have taken some teacher formation course from various campuses of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Minas Gerais (IFMG) and the Federal Center of Technological Education of Minas Gerais (CEFET-MG) were interviewed. For the analysis and interpretation of data, we resorted to content analysis and a qualitative approach was used. The results showed that the process of institutionalization of teacher formation for professional education over the years has followed a path that is not consistent, unstable and obscure. It was concluded that teacher formation has a potential to transform the way of acting and thinking of the teacher and is very relevant for the training of teachers at EPTNM.
