Abstract

The article presented here, whose locus is a public school in Salvador-Bahia, is the result of a Master's research carried out within the scope of the Graduate Education and Contemporary Program (PPGEDUC) at the State University of Bahia (UNEB). This research brings as its main concern the understanding of teachers about the teaching work while it highlights the complexity that involves their profession and points out, from the context experienced at school, elements that contribute to the understanding of the importance of continuing education. This is a case study with a qualitative approach, through interviews and discussion groups, and presents theoretical foundations associated with the teachers' speeches. The results, in their own voices, show that the teachers understand themselves as professionals, subjects of a complex activity that are willing to work and who understand teaching work as a way of making a difference in the world, adding competence, knowledge, responsibility and ethics.
