Abstract

This artcle presents results of the Social and Labor Observatory Project in Maranhão, developed within the Framework of the Group for the Assessment and Study of Poverty and Policies Directed to Poverty (GAEPP), articulated with the Graduate Program in Public Policies (PPGPP) of the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA). The Social and Labor Observatory aims to promote the coordination, articulation and dissemination of studies and research that configure its two thematic axes,
Poverty and Work, with a view to supporting and empowering social to subjects appropriate information necessary for decision-making processes and the exercise of control public policy. The article is organized in three axes: the first presents the conception and dynamics of operation of the Social Observatory and Labor as a mechanism of democratization and social control of public policies; the second and third discuss, respectively, the precariousness of work and poverty, in Brazil
and Maranhão, in the post-coup context of 2016 and especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
