Abstract

This essay aims to offer a sociological contribution to the history of the social sciences in Latin America, investigating aspects of Aníbal Quijano’s intellectual
trajectory and his crossings with Brazil during the 1960s and 1970s. Quijano’s academic and political contact with intellectuals in exile in Chile made possible the diffusion, even if restricted, of part of his production among Brazilians abroad and also among intellectuals who were in the tropical country, circumscribed in the area of “urban sociology”. In contrast, his productions of ongoing Peruvian political experiences, peasant movements, armed struggle and the military government of Velasco Alvarado (1968-1975) had little repercussion in Brazil. By mobilizing exchanges and flows between Quijano and Brazilian intellectuals from the perspective of the international circulation of ideas and agents, our work presents new questions to think about the relationship between Brazilian and Latin American sociology.
