Abstract

The strategies for generating work and income developed by ex-rice planters in the rural neighborhoods of Sobradinho and Martins, in Piranguçu, south of Minas Gerais, Brazil, are central
to this article. The objective was to learn about these strategies developed and the changes promoted after the end of rice fieldes in communities since the 2000s. To achieve the objective of this article, it was necessary to appeal to the subjects of the scenario to be researched, which was chosen by the perception, of one of the researchers, of the changes that occur in the studied locations. The investigation took place with twenty subjects who have family and identity ties with the neighborhoods. The interviews portray the transformations and the configuration of the two
neighborhoods studied through the life stories of each selected resident. The results showed a process of change in the economic and social structure of the neighborhoods, which transformed the way of life of its residents. With the strategies of non-agricultural work and trips to urban areas, the neighborhoods proved to be incorporated into the new urban configuration of the municipality of Piranguçu, however, maintaining a peasantry that still insists on resisting.
