Pedagogical residency program: Liesafro's actions for anti-racist education

Abstract

The article aims to share the successful actions for anti-racist education of the subproject of the Bachelor's Degree in African and Afro-Brazilian Studies of the Federal University of Maranhão (Liesafro-UFMA) in the Pedagogical Residency Program (CAPES), with application in the Quilombola School Centro Educa Mais Luiz Alves Ferreira, located in Quilombo/Bairro da Liberdade, São Luís do Maranhão (Brazil). Such actions made it possible to promote an anti-racist education with an emphasis on teaching diverse History, breaking the paradigm of a Eurocentric History. In this text, two actions will be highlighted: the application of the Indicators of Quality in Education - Racial Relations in Schools (Carreira; Souza, 2013) and the implementation of an anti-racist library, which enhanced the first experiences of the residents in basic education. The theoretical frameworks used included “The Danger of a Single Story” by Chimamanda Adichie (2019) and “Candomblé and Umbanda: Paths of Brazilian Devotion” by Vagner Gonçalves (2005). The results of the actions showed the importance of building a school environment committed to racial equity. The Pedagogical Residency revealed its transformative potential for university students, facilitating integration between the University and Basic Education and emphasizing the need to apply Law No. 10.639/2003 and teacher training aimed at combating racism.
