The use of the fantastic as a tool of social reflection in Lygia Fagundes Telles short stories

Lygia Fagundes Telles, one of the most prominent figures in Brazilian literature, left behind a remarkable legacy. Her narratives, though grounded in realism, incorporate fantastic elements that evoke a sense of unease in both readers and characters. In this context, the present study investigates how the author employs the fantastic to construct mystery and critique social issues. Drawing on the theories of Todorov (2008), David Roas (2009), and Bueno (2016), this article analyzes the short story O Jardim Selvagem (1969), exploring how the author conveys criticism through the uncanny. Through the character of Daniela, enigmatic and exhibiting peculiar behavior, notably her gloved hand, Telles addresses rigid social expectations, highlighting how status, wealth, and reputation shape the characters’ actions. These elements guide their behavior, while deeper and darker concerns emerge through the story’s mysterious atmosphere. Thus, the uncanny not only intensifies the narrative but also becomes a powerful tool for critical reflection.
