Bibliotecas Públicas e Turismo Literário: o Potencial Turístico-Literário da Biblioteca Pública Benedito Leite no Complexo Deodoro em São Luís, Maranhão

Resumo

Reflexão acerca do potencial turístico da Biblioteca Pública Benedito Leite (BPBL) no recém-inaugurado Complexo Deodoro, no centro de São Luís, Maranhão. Segunda biblioteca pública mais antiga do Brasil, está instalada na Praça Deodoro desde 1898 e tem desenvolvido, ao longo de seus 193 anos de existência, produtos, serviços, ações culturais, acesso e mediação da leitura, apropriação dos patrimônios e da cultura maranhense. Considera a importância histórica e cultural da BPBL, potencializado pela reforma e modernização do centro de São Luís, notadamente o Complexo Deodoro, explicita seu potencial turístico-cultural, a partir das visitas guiadas onde são ressaltados tantos aspectos materiais, relacionados ao prédio histórico como aspectos imateriais relacionados à cultura literária maranhense, resultando em um local que possibilita múltiplas interações e intersubjetividades. Parte da seguinte problemática: de que forma os fluxos turísticos, após a modernização do Complexo Deodoro, podem favorecer o turismo cultural na Biblioteca Pública Benedito Leite? Para tanto, tem como objetivo geral: relacionar turismo cultural e biblioteca pública a partir dos fatores e fluxos turísticos no Complexo Deodoro que contribuem para que os cidadãos ludovicenses se reaproximem da Biblioteca Pública Benedito Leite. Consiste em um estudo de natureza exploratória, com fins descritivos, de abordagem qualitativa, e se vale da pesquisa bibliográfica e documental para discutir o potencial turístico-cultural da BPBL a partir de autores como IFLA (1994), Almeida Júnior (2013; 2015), Gomes (2014), Milanesi (2013), Pereira, Castro e Ramos (2016), Almeida Garret, Simões (2004), Rebouças (2010), Salvador e Baptista (2011), dentre outros. Reforça os ganhos de público da BPBL após a inauguração do Complexo Deodoro, visto o aumento significativo de usuários nos últimos meses. Destaca que as ações culturais da Benedito Leite, tais como mediação da leitura, visita guiada, contação de histórias, projetos como Cinema na Biblioteca, exposições têm ratificado o potencial da instituição em difundir a leitura e a literatura, favorecido pelo público frequentador da área após a reforma, o que acaba por se tornar um atrativo cultural à parte. Pontua que a modernização do Centro de São Luís representa um ganho para o aumento do fluxo de visitantes na Praça e acaba por reaproximar os cidadãos da BPBL, além de favorecer a difusão da leitura e da literatura através de seus serviços e produtos. Ressalta que o Complexo Deodoro se mostra como local atrativo para visitantes, sobretudo após a reforma, o que por sua vez direciona os usuários para a BPBL, que se apresenta como um dos “cartões postais” da capital ludovicense.

Public Libraries and Literary Tourism: the Tourist-Literary Potential of the Benedito Leite Public Library at the Deodoro Complex in São Luís, Maranhão 

ABSTRACT

Reflection about the touristic potential of the Benedito Leite Public Library (BLPL) at the recently inaugurated Deodoro Complex, downtown São Luís, Maranhão. Second oldest public library in Brazil, it is installed at the Deodoro Square since 1898, developing products, services, cultural activities, reading access and mediation, patrimonial and cultural appropriation from Maranhão along its 193 years of existence. We consider the historical and cultural importance of BLPL, which is enhanced by the reform and modernization of São Luís’ historic center, notably the Deodoro Complex, highlights its touristic-cultural potential through guided visits in which both material and immaterial aspects about the building and the state’s literary culture are highlighted. Therefore, the area becomes a place that enables multiple interactions and subjectivities. We start from the following problem: in which way do the touristic flows after the modernization of the Deodoro Complex may favor the cultural tourism at the Benedito Leite Public Library? For such, our general objective is to relate cultural tourism and the public library from touristic factors and flows on the Deodoro Complex that contribute to the reconnection between the city’s citizens and the BLPL. This is an exploratory and descriptive study using a qualitative approach using bibliographic and documental research to discuss the cultural-touristic potential of the BLPL from authors such as IFLA (1994), Almeida Júnior (2013; 2015), Gomes (2014), Milanesi (2013), Pereira, Castro e Ramos (2016), Almeida Garret, Simões (2004), Rebouças (2010), Salvador e Baptista (2011), among others. It reinforces the increases in public at the BLPL after the Deodoro Complex was inaugurated due to the significant increase in users during the last months. It is also highlighted the cultural activities of the library, such as reading mediations, guided visits, storytelling, projects such as the Library Cinema, and exhibits that have ratified the institution’s potential to spread reading and literature, thus favoring the attending public after the renovations, which is a cultural attraction by itself. It is also pointed that the modernization of São Luís historic center represents an increase in the amount of visitors in the Square, thus reconnecting the citizens with the BLPL. We also reinforce that the Deodoro Complex is now an attractive place for visitors, especially after the renovations, which directs users for the BLPL, which now presents itself as one of the city’s postcards.
