Abstract

This article discusses the definitions attributed to the concept of autonomyin official documents that regulate the Unified Social Assistance System. From the search for the term in the regulations and guidelines, and the attempt to understand the meanings attributed to it, presents an overview of the settings assumed by the concept in the course of
publications. Finally, it concludes that autonomy, in official documents, presents several nuances, ranging from not providing definitions, going through the delimitation marked by conceptual imprecision or fragile theoretical consistency, even more critical and complex definitions. The study also highlights the latent presence of a liberal ideal permeating the foundations of social assistance policy, that directly affects social work with families, emphasizing the urgent need for his criticism.
