Abstract

The 70 years of the Social Work course in Maranhão State is contextualized in Brazil and in Latin America,
situated in the structure and conjuncture of the capitalist social formation. The used procedure was bibliographic revision referenced in the author experience in the Social Work in Brazil and in Latin America. The content covers: the history of Social Work in Brazil, placing its origins in the 1930’s; The period of North American influence from 1945 onwards; the insufficiency of the conservatism in the Social Work and its contribution to status quo maintenance in Latin America in the years of 1960, highlighting the Reconceptuation Movement in the Continent and its penetration in Brazil. The focus of the article is the inclusion of the trajectory of the Social Work in Maranhão State. The central idea is to disclose the dynamic of conservantism transitioning to a perspective of transformation.
