Abstract

The article aims to discuss access to mechanisms of the Brazilian social protection system, from the perspective of the collective memory of elderly women who live in long-term institutions. It uses bibliographic, documentary and field research as methodological strategies, with emphasis on fluctuating observation, in-depth open interviews and photographic record in field research. Instead of social protection, it identified a large gap revealing the inexistence or lack of material and affective resources along the trajectories of these women. We conclude that there are several types of social protection that, depending on the socio-historical context, can expand or be restricted. Consequently, access to these mechanisms occurs in a different way, according to the social conditions available and the varied contexts of social insertion of the subjects.
