Brazilian contemporaneity in the paths of dependent adjustment to financialized capitalism

Abstract

This article discusses 21st century capitalism, taking as a reference the structural crisis of capital, its specific configurations in Brazil and developments in the world of work. It begins with reflections on the structural crisis of capital, to delve into the specificities of Brazil's dependent and subordinated insertion in capitalism under the dominion of finance, via a neoextractivist rentier adjustment model, from 1990 onwards. It establishes configurations of the world of work under the aegis of
the crisis, with a focus on the super-exploitation of work, amidst ultra-liberal policies. It emphasizes the limit moment experienced by Brazilian society, in the last six years (2016-2022), at the confluence of bolsonarismo and the covid19 pandemic. It assumes the perspective that the History of contemporary Brazil is open, with different possibilities of outcome, betting on the political capacity of the resistances.
