Abstract

This article discusses the development of polycentric governance, analyzing closely the struggle against mercury use in the Amazon, specifically in the Yanomamis Indigenous Territories (YIT), in the state of Roraima. In this state, illegal mining activity provides negative externalities to its peoples, standing out within the current political scenario regarding this problem in the country. An integrative review with a qualitative approach was used, using the designs principles proposed by Elinor Ostrom for analysis and examining the aspects of polycentric governance on mercury at the global, national and local levels. This review revealed the challenges that exist in order to implement a polycentric governance given the incompatibilities between indigenous people and miners in Brazil, and also a political scenario with a non-existent polycentric approach. It is noteworthy that this study is just the starting point for the deepening worrisome theme addressed.
