Abstract

This article investigates the presence of the figure of Don Quixote in Brazilian popular music through the analysis of a corpus composed by five lyrics from songs released between 1969 and 2005, performed by different names of the modern Brazilian songbook. The analysis was divided into two parts: in the first, we address the songs that have a more direct relationship with the Cervantine novel: “Don Quixote”, by Arnaldo Baptista and Rita Lee (Os Mutantes) and “Teatro (Dom Quixote)”, by Tom Zé; in the second, we examine the lyrics “Don Quixote” by Milton Nascimento and César Camargo Mariano and “Dom Quixote” by Humberto Gessinger and Paulinho Galvão, that are based on the symbolic construction of the literary myth of Don Quixote, a myth crystallized by the romantic interpretation. The theoretical background is based on the studies of Jean-Claude Carrière and Michael Nerlich about the concept of literary myth, as well as on the contributions of authors such as Erich Auerbach, Alfred Schütz and Maria Augusta da Costa Vieira to the understanding of aspects of Cervantine romance. The study discusses the articulation between literature and song, focusing on the formal and thematic aspects that reveal the different interpretations of the quixotic figure in the Brazilian musical imagery.
