DISCOURSE OF MISCEGENATION AS PORTUGUESE COLONIAL POLICY
The Cape Verdean intellectuality and the importation of the Brazilian miscegena-tion narrative (1936-1955)

The article analyzes the discourse of Cape Verdean intellectuals of Claridade. These historical agents, situated in the context of Lusitanian colonialism, intended to represent Cape Verde as a model colony in the Portuguese empire. Therefore, they resorted to Gilberto Freyre's narratives about the racial miscegenation present in Brazil to reinforce the colonial discourse that the local society was creole. Based on Foucault's theory, we can analyze discursive practices and understand them as systems of representation. Furthermore, the article does not ignore the specificities of Portuguese colonialism, as it seeks to bring into the debate the different imperialist approaches common to the 20th century, being the French, English, and Portuguese. The latter, concerned with the perpetuation of domination over Africa, embraced the discourse of miscegenation as an imperial policy.
