The Myth of King Sebastian in Cururupu and Lençóis Island: History, Memory, and the Social Imaginary

This article investigates the resignification of the Sebastianist myth on Lençóis Island, located in the municipality of Cururupu on the western coast of Maranhão, Brazil. The text analyzes how the historical figure of King Sebastian of Portugal, who vanished in the Battle of Alcácer-Quibir in 1578, has been transmuted in the local popular imagination into an "enchanted king" appearing as a black bull with a star on its forehead. It discusses the belief that the island's significant albino population descends directly from the monarch, as well as the prophecy that his disenchantment will cause the Kingdom of Queluz to rise while the capital, São Luís, sinks. The work establishes connections between Portuguese historiography, Brazilian messianism, the Bumba-meu-boi festival, and Afro-Brazilian religions (Tambor de Mina), demonstrating how the myth functions as a utopia of justice and prosperity for the region's traditional fishing and maroon (quilombola) communities.
