Abstract

This essay discusses contemporary transformations in cultural mediation amid the expansion of digital platforms and algorithmic culture. Drawing on Jesús Martín-Barbero, Pierre Bourdieu, and Ted Striphas, it argues that digital culture does not simply eliminate traditional forms of cultural criticism, but infrastructurally reorganizes contemporary regimes of circulation, visibility, and symbolic legitimation. In this context, digital platforms and algorithmic systems increasingly participate directly in the public production of cultural relevance.

Author Biographies

Prof., Midwestern State University of Parana

PhD in Communication and Culture from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ/RJ, Brazil). Master’s degree in Media Communication from São Paulo State University (UNESP-Bauru/SP, Brazil). Bachelor’s degree in Social Communication and Specialization in Popular and Community Communication, both from the State University of Londrina (UEL/PR, Brazil). Between 2017 and 2018, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Theoretical Philosophy at the Scuola Normale Superiore under the supervision of Roberto Esposito. Between 2022 and 2023, he was a Visiting Professor at Loughborough University London. He has experience in radio and television (educational and community media) and university extension projects funded by SETI (Secretariat for Science, Technology and Higher Education of the State of Paraná, Brazil). In 2025, he developed the project The Contributions of the Kyoto School to the Study of Communication, Technology, and Literature at Kyoto Prefectural University, supported by a SETI fellowship. He is the leader of the research group Laboratory of Communication and Biopolitics Studies (LABBIO/CNPq). He is the author of the books Biopoder e Comunicação (CRV, 2022), A crise do comum – Comunidade e Comunicação I (Appris, 2017), and Ensaio sobre Ser-com – Comunidade e Comunicação II (Appris, 2020). He is currently Visiting Professor at the Graduate Program in Communication at UEL and Associate Professor at the Midwestern State University (UNICENTRO/PR, Brazil), where he also conducts research in the following areas: Communication Theories, Media Biopolitics, and Community Cinema. He served as coordinator of the Epistemology Working Group of Compós between 2023 and 2025.
