ABSTRACT
Relationship between the structural attributes of trees of Avicennia germinans (L.) Stearn and their reproductive phenology
The present study evaluates the influence of structural attributes on the reproductive phenology of A. germinans trees. Fieldwork was carried out at two sites on the Ajuruteua peninsula. Site#01 is characterized by dwarf trees up to 4 m tall. Site#02 by trees up to 25 m. Twenty trees were tagged at each site, being the number of flowers and fruits recorded in an ordinal scale. The comparison between flower and fruit yield between both sites did not present significant difference (Mann-Whitney U=48; df=1, p<0,05 flower; U=66; df=1, p<0,05). No significant difference was found at both sites (U=66; gl=1, p>0,05 Sítio#01 and U=57 gl=1, p>0,05 Sítio#02) when phenophases from each site were compared. The A. germinans stands synchronize the flowering and fruiting periods showing that both sites can present the same pattern of flower and fruit production . It seems a strategy where the flower yield coincides with the dry season and fruit yield with the wet one. In sum, the phenological behavior of A. germinans showed to be independent of the structural patterns of the trees indicating no influence on the reproductive phenology of this species.
