RANCIÈRE, CRITIC OF MARX: EQUALITY AND POLITICS

Abstract

Jacques Rancière is an intellectual whose trajectory is marked by an intense debate with the writings of Karl Marx. In this article, Rancière’s critiques of Marx are analyzed, particularly those formulated since his declared rupture with Marxism. The analysis is made, at first moment, from an immanent critique of the rancièrian’s arguments about equality and politics. In a second moment, it pursues to systematize the French philosopher’s criticisms of Marx. Finally,
an interpellation is made between both authors looking for approximations and distances. What is verified is that the comparison between Rancière and Marx mainly concerns their conceptions of equality and politics. It is argued, therefore, that reinforcing the existing dialogue between them contributes to contemporary efforts to promote equality.
