THE MEDITATION TO FEAR AND ANXIETY CONTROL DENTAL PRE-TREATMENT:

A PROTOCOL SUGGESTION

Abstract

Introduction: Phobia and anxiety are present in dental procedures because they are stigmatized as hostile and reminiscent of pain. There are numerous ways to control these emotional changes, however, the pharmacological option is almost always chosen which can have side effects and the meditation could be the method of choice in many cases. Aim: The present study proposes a clinical protocol to decrease or stop anxiety and fear effects before dental procedures. Methods: Descriptive study based in integrative literature review to search sciences studies, between 2013 and 2022 in BVS, Scielo, ScienceDirect, Pubmed and Google scholar databases, through of the descriptors: meditation, dentistry, dental care, anxiety, fear and phobia, and its variations for the English and Spanish languages. Results: Of 643 potentially relevant articles, the authors included 10 studies for the final analysis. Meditation’s effectiveness in fear and anxiety control was positive in patients of different age groups and in all analyzed dental treatments. Between studies, it observed higher prevalence of the use this method in surgical and endodontic procediments. Conclusion: Clinical meditation it showed a non-pharmacological method quite efficient in the treatment of emotional dysfunctions, being able to replace drugs for the dental fear and anxiety control. Therefore, the propused protocol in this study must be discussed and used.
