The STRUCTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS OF SWALLOWING IN PRE AND POST-SURGICAL PATIENTS OF INTRACRANIAL ANEURYSM

INTRODUCTION: Intracranial aneurysm generates impacts that can interfere with the patient's quality of life, manifesting speech-language disorders, with swallowing being one of the most altered functions. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the functional and structural aspect of swallowing in patients diagnosed with intracranial aneurysm. METHOD: This is a cross-sectional, analytical-descriptive, retrospective study. The sample consisted of 60 patients who were treated by the Speech-Language Pathology Service of the University Hospital of the Federal University of Maranhão. The variables analyzed were included in the speech therapy protocol. To compare the pre- and post-surgical moments, the McNemar test was used. RESULTS: The patients had an improved functional status in relation to the pre-surgical moment in all variables (p<0.05), with the exception of cervical auscultation and laryngeal elevation. The dysphagic degree improved, and at the post-aneurysm moment, 27 (71.1%) presented a mild dysphagic degree. CONCLUSION: Patients diagnosed with intracranial aneurysm treated by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology service did not present significant evolution in relation to the structural evaluation in the postoperative period, but improvement was observed in all variables of the post-surgery functional evaluation related to food, with the exception of the variables cervical auscultation and laryngeal elevation.
