FRESA Y CHOCOLATE Y LA LEGITIMIDAD DE LA DIFERENCIA

Resumo

Meu trabalho pretende explorar a situação opressiva que certos grupos minoritários como os homossexuais sofreram durante os anos setenta em Cuba. Para ilustrar este tema selecionei o filme cubano Fresa y Chocolate (1993) – dirigido por Tomás Gutiérrez Alca e Juan Carlos Tabío, baseado no conto do escritor cubano Senel Paz, El lobo, el bosque y el hombre nuevo – para examinar a posição do grupo de homossexuais no contexto sócio-político do período pós-revolucionário; proponho discutir o trabalho injusto aos homens marginalizados e o efeito negativo que isto representa para toda a sociedade. O filme é um protesto contra as normas opressivas, evidente não só através da voz dos personagens, como também, indiretamente, através de situações e imagens que expressam suas desgraças, ansiedades e desejos frustrados. Minha análise se centrará particularmente em como os homossexuais na Cuba pós-revolucionária tiveram que lutar contra uma sociedade arraigadamente machista e o dogmatismo político de um regime ditatorial. Em suma, Fresa y chocolate propõe uma revisão dos valores predominantes na sociedade cubana e por sua vez tenta reafirmar uma identidade nacional que inclua todos os sabores, opções e interpretações da existência humana.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to explore the issues which faced Cuba’s minority groups during the worst years of anti-gay repression in the 1970s. I will use the portrayal of homosexuality in the Cuban film Fresa y Chocolate (1993) by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Juan Carlos Tabio to examine the position of this group in the social and policial context of the post-revolutionary period and will argue how the theme of homosexuality is used as an analogy for the unjust treatment of any marginal individual in culture ando f the detrimental effect this can have on the whole society. The film is an evident protest against oppressive normas, not only through the voices of the characters, but also indirectly through situations and images that express the misfortunes, concerns and frustrated desires of the characters. Special consideration will be given to how gays had to contend with the traditional cultural values of a macho society in revolutionary Cuba. I also sim to show how this film highlights the lack of recognition of, and the failure to give equal value to the “other”, different, but equally valid member of society, a condition that constitutes a central defect of cultural life. All and all, the film proposes a revision of the values that predominated in Cuban life at that time and attempts to reaffirm a national identity that could include all flavours, options and interpretations of human existence.
