CARNIVAL AND THE ORISHAS: the impact of African belief systems on the calypso an masquerade of Trinidad Carnival

Resumo

“Shango” ou “Orisha” é uma religião afro-trinidadiana que durante muitos anos foi formalmente proibida. Contudo, referência ao Shango e Orisha surgem no carnaval trinidadiano (mas) – originalmente uma tradição de origem europeia – e especialmente nas canções de calypso. É no carnaval e na tradição musical que as referências a uma consciência negra ou “Orisha” é enfatizada, mesmo no período em que a religião era proibida. Atualmente, as referências a Orisha/Shango na cultura musical local apontam para uma grande vitalidade da cultura afro-trinidadiana.

Abstract

Shango or Orisha is an Afro-Trinidadian religion. For many years its practice was forbidden by law. However, references to Shango and Orisha come up in carnival (mas), even though this last was originally a European tradition. Those references have been especially common in calypso songs. It is therefore in Carnival and the local music tradition that a black or Orisha consciousness is stressed. This happened even during the time when the religion was forbidden. Nowadays references to Orisha/Shango in local music culture point to the great vitality of Afro-Trinidadian culture.
