Intensive quantities: analysis of an intervention with students of the 5th year of Brazilian Elementary School

Abstract

The rational numbers in their fractional form are part of the content developed by schools from the 4th and 5th years of Brazilian Elementary School, and have been considered, by the academic Community, as problematic content. In this article, an analysis is presented in order to identify the contributions of understanding the measurement's meaning, in the context of intensive quantities, for the learning of Rational Numbers in its fractional representation for Brazilian 5th grade students. To this end, a study was carried out with 24 students, from the Application School of the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. The theoretical basis of this research relied on the Theory of Conceptual Fields, proposed by Vergnaud, and the theoretical ideas of Nunes et al. The quasi-experimental methodology was organized into three stages: the first, referred to the application of the pre-test; at the second, the intervention phase and, at the end, the stage of applying two post-tests. The data were analyzed in two perspectives: the quantitative, in which it was searched to relate the percentage of correct answers, and the qualitative, aiming to identify the kind of mistakes made by the students. The results showed that the measurement meaning had distinct effects on learning the fraction and brought contributions to the beginning of the appropriation of this object.

Keywords: Fraction; Intensive quantities; Measurement.

ER -
